The challenges of cruising out of Manhattan

The Challenges of Taking a Cruise From NYC/ Manhattan Cruise Terminal

Cruises are becoming more and more popular!  Taking a cruise from the Manhattan Cruise Port sounds like a fantastic idea! … Until you start looking into the specifics of your journey.  Unless you live in NYC, the expenses can add up!

If you live in the NYC area and are driving into the city for the cruise you have a number of additional expenses to consider.  One of these is the toll to get into the city via the Lincoln Tunnel or one of the bridges, $15+ the cost of gas.  Another is the cost of parking at the cruise terminal.  Parking at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal is $25 – $35 a day plus tax!  If you are on a 7 day cruise that is a total of $220 – 245, and a 10 day cruise $250 – 350 including taxes, just for parking!  If you are taking a longer cruise or are planning on spending an additional day in the city the cost just goes up.  Right here we are definitely over $250, and could be over $400 depending on the length of the cruise.

If you are coming from out of the local area to take this cruise the expenses add up even more!  You fly into the New York area- then what?  You are faced with the question of where to spend the night before your cruise takes off.  The first thought is to stay in NYC.  This can be both convenient and expensive!  Between $250 and $400 including tax, just on the hotel room.  Then the cost of the taxi from the airport to the hotel, and then from the hotel to the cruise port.  The cost of a taxi from JFK or LGA to midtown is over $50+ tolls.  The cost of the taxi to the cruise terminal from the hotel will be $15+, then the cab ride back to the airport $50+ tolls.  Depending on the hotel you are staying at this runs you between $400 and $550.  OUCH!
