We are often asked about ways to get in and out of Manhattan from our Newark Airport hotels. This makes sense as many of our clients booking Park, Stay and Cruiise as well as Fly, Stay and Cruise packages for the Cape Liberty Cruise Port are staying at one of our Newark Airport hotels. We encourage people to come in a day or two prior to their cruise to explore Manhattan and the many great attractions it has to offer. Newark Airport is very close (less than an hour drive in traffic) to the Times Square area of midtown Manhattan.
Here are some of the many ways to travel into Manhattan from Newark Airport:
Getting from EWR to Manhattan (and back):
- Air Train: The Air Train offers connecting service to NJ Transit and Amtrak trains which will bring you into Manhattan. Surprisingly, this can actually be much quicker than taking a cab or bus, and it is much more affordable. $11.55 one way will bring you from Newark Airport to Penn Station. AirTrain connects the NJ Transit "Newark Airport Station" to the airport terminals. Consult the schedule to determine the schedule of connecting trains. Service is available from 5 a.m. until 2 a.m.

Amtrak/NJ TRANSIT/AirTrain Station
3 Brewster Road
Newark, NJ 07114 - Train Station – Station Building (with waiting room)
Featuring large expanses of glass, this bright and airy station links busy Newark Liberty International Airport with Amtrak and New Jersey Transit rail services via monorail. There is no direct access to this station by road, only by train or the monorail. Parking and other facilities are available at the airport.
Monorail fare is included in Amtrak tickets to and from the Newark Airport Rail Station. To use this monorail, Amtrak passengers with tickets showing Newark Airport as the destination or boarding point can scan the barcode on their eTicket travel document (smartphone or paper) at the Airtrain fare gate. Passengers without tickets showing Newark Airport must purchase $5.00 monorail tickets from the NJT ticket vending machines located at the transfer station.
You must have an Amtrak ticket before boarding Amtrak trains from this station.
-
Taxis: from Newark Airport: Metered fare (plus tolls) to any Manhattan location, approximately $50-75. Taxis are available outside of every terminal and there is typically a taxi stand where you will be directed to a taxi. There is an additional charge for luggage over 24 inches if the driver handles the bags, and rates are based per car, not per passenger (up to four passengers).
- To Newark Airport: Metered fare (approximately $69-75) plus return tolls and a $15 surcharge for an NYC Taxi to Newark Airport.
- Car Services: Prearrange for a car service to meet you at the airport, or call one when your flight touches down. This is a great option if you want to avoid waiting in line for a taxi or if you have a group larger than four people and want to arrange for a van or limousine. I recommend Way To Go Car and Limo : 551-258-3777 Tell them that Bruce from Trinity Reservations recommend them.
Private Shuttles: Several companies offer shuttles to Manhattan, including:
- Go Airlink NYC: Go Airlink NYC offers shared transfers from EWR (starting at $12/person), as well as private transfers via sedan or van for groups of up to 11 passengers ($64-133/transfer). Rides are available 24 hours a day, though wait times for shared transfers at night may vary.
- Newark Liberty Airport Express: Available from 4 a.m. – 1 a.m., these shuttles leave every 15-30 minutes for midtown Manhattan and every 2 hours to downtown Manhattan (from 11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.). One-way fare is $16, but you can save by buying round-trip tickets, as they are $28. One free child under 16 is included in the fare. You can choose to disembark at Grand Central, Port Authority or Penn Station, in addition to midtown hotels. The ride takes about an hour. Return schedules and more information are available on their website.
- Super Shuttle: Available 24 hours a day, this shuttle provides door to door service for your party. Fares are $15 – $19, depending on destination. No reservations are required to get from the airport to your destination, but they are required for your return trip to the airport. Consult their website or call 1-800-258-3826 for more information. Book your SuperShuttle Transfer through Viator.
- Rental Cars: Consult this list of rental car companies serving EWR if you need to rent a car. I discourage visitors to New York City from renting cars, unless they're planning extensive travel outside of the major metropolitan area. Parking is both expensive and difficult to find, and you will find your money better spent on mass transit and taxis. Driving directions to and from EWR.
